The funny things kids say!

The funny things kids do!

This page is dedicated to God’s precious children!

Children bring joy to our lives. Anyone who has ever had the privilege of teaching children knows something of the beauty that they can add to your life! Children do and say such funny things, things that cause us to laugh and even things that bring tears to our eyes.

The following are things children have both said and done in our Release Time program.

ENJOY!

If you have a cute, funny or even tear jerking short story to tell about teaching children (as it pertains to Bible study) Email them to us and we will post them to this page!

Who Wears The Pants?

When teaching ‘Creation’ to our Release Time students, one student had a funny remark when we got to the part of ‘The Curse’ that befell man because of his sin. When I had read from the bible that the woman’s curse was to desire her husband and he will rule over her, one 3rd grade girl quickly raised her hand! She said, "Mrs. Flowers, it don’t work that way at my house! At my house my mom’s the BOSS! Dad says she wears the pants in the family!"

Did Adam and Eve Have Weight Problems?

During the same ‘Creation Lesson’ as above several children had an interesting comment to make! We were filling in the blanks of a work sheet on Creation. The children followed along in their Bibles as I read the scripture. When I got to the part where it said "And when Eve saw that the fruit was desirable for gaining _____?"… I paused so that they can fill in the blank themselves with the word ‘wisdom’, and several children shouted …"Weight! It’s desirable for gaining weight!"

The Class Clown!

It seems that you always have at least one child in every group that wants to be the ‘class clown’. We had one such child in our 4th grade class one year. He would raise his hand for just about anything. I never wanted to ignore him in case he had a valid question he wanted answered. Any time he had his hand up, and we called on him, his usual response was " ‘Bobbie’ let one rip!", or " ‘Julie’s picking her nose!’, or even "I gotta go to the bathroom!" But, there were those times when he had serious questions. I never want to think what would have happened if I never called on him just because he wanted to show off! I know a few awesome preachers who by their own admission used to be the ‘CLASS CLOWN!

The Selfless Act of Generosity by a Child!

Once in a while we will have a child come through the program that has a special circumstance with their health. One little girl in our 3rd grade class was such a child. She had Diabetes. We did not know this at the beginning of the program. At the end of every class we hand out individually wrapped treats to the children as they leave to get on the bus. Usually the treats are candy bars, lunch cakes and bubble gum. This sweet little girl politely took her treat and got on the bus every week. One day I was in the school and this little girl’s teacher stopped me in the hallway. She asked if I knew that the child was a diabetic. I panicked because I thought she had been eating the candy and getting sick! But, her teacher told me that every week she would come back to school with her treat and give it to her little brother!!! What willpower this child had, and what love she displayed to her brother as well as her Public School teacher and her Release Time teacher! That afternoon I went straight to the store and bought diabetic candy and sugarless gum!

A Child’s Prayer

We continually stress prayer throughout our Release Time program. We pray before each class session. The children are asked if there is anything they want to pray for. Many times they bring up a sick loved one, or a classmate who broke a bone and is in a cast etc. We had a student that was very sweet and quiet-natured in our 4th grade class. After taking prayer requests I began leading them in prayer when this child started crying. Come to find out, his grandfather was in the hospital and was not expected to make it through the week. Because of his quiet nature he just didn’t bring it up. We prayed together with him for his grandfather and he was able to calm down. There is just something so special about the prayer of a child!

 Angels Unawares

This story was submitted by a Youth Pastor who now resides in Evansville, Indiana.

Many experiences happen to us along life’s journey, but occasionally events take place in our lives that we never forget. Such as it was on a warm summer day a few years ago along a Boone County road south of Lebanon, Indiana. I had just appointed church officers in our small church, Alpha & Omega Outreach of Thorntown, Indiana. What was unusual about this church was that 12 teenagers, who set out to do the work of the ministry and reach other teens with the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, founded it. I had the privilege of being their pastor!

On a Saturday morning, myself, and the new church officers piled in our old run down 1977 Chevy van to take a trip to Indianapolis to a large Christian book store to get some good Sunday school material for the church. The van was almost always on the verge of falling apart, and we always prayed at the beginning of every outing we took that we could get there and back in one piece. After successfully getting some good material for Sunday school, we began the 50 mile drive back to Thorntown, Indiana. Almost ¾ of the way home, some had to take a restroom break, and I needed to get gas for the old Chevy van. As I finished putting gas in the van and the teens returned with snacks, we began the last leg of our trip. We had to take a side road to the interstate 65 entrance ramp. But only a mile up the road, the old van sputtered and died. Every time I was able to start it, it would run for about 3 seconds and then shut back off. Not a good situation, as the sun was going down and I had a vanload of teenagers and a broken down van. My worst fears were that the poor old vehicle had driven its last mile, as it leaked oil and had some serious engine problems. The young people tried to keep a positive attitude, but after about 30 minutes of fooling with the engine, there was no starting of the vehicle. I felt rather foolish when Jeff, my treasurer suggested we pray after quite some time of sitting there! Here I was, the pastor, and hadn’t even taken the step to pray. Not having the best of faith a man could have…(I knew the condition of the van)…I then asked Jeff to pray. Jeff prayed a simple and direct prayer. He simply asked the Lord to fix the van, and let it start so we could go home. Them when he was done praying, he asked me to start the van in faith. I turned the key, the engine cranked…and cranked…and wouldn’t start. Then Jeff said…"Well that does a lot for your faith!" We nervously chuckled and I sought for some ‘pastoral’ answer to give the young people to enact spiritual ‘damage control.’ It was now dark. It seemed Jesus didn’t hear us or answer our prayers, and I felt the only thing left to do was to walk back to the truck stop and call parents to come and get us. It was then that two headlights came up the side road towards us, coming off the interstate. The headlights approached, and began to slow down. It then became obvious that the car was going to stop. Was whoever was in this car going to help us? Or was this a dangerous situation that I would need to react quickly to? The car pulled up by the driver’s side of the van where I was sitting. The passenger window was rolled down, and in the car I could make out the outline of a man, not young, but old. I suddenly felt a strange presence as I could clearly see his eyes burning on me. It was as if they looked right through me! He then spoke in a very serious and direct manner. The teen agers were all pressed to the left side of the van wondering what was going on, as this strange man began to talk…….His words I may never forget: "I was directed by the Lord to take this exit and speak with you. The reason you are stranded along this road is because you didn’t put gasoline in this vehicle. You put diesel fuel in the tank by mistake. Now here is the main thing I am to say to you…..Jesus is coming VERY SOON, AND IT IS NO TIME TO PLAY GAMES WITH GOD." He then drove off into the night.

We all sat there stunned. Then, as if on cue, we all scrambled out of the van around to the side where the gas tank was located. I slowly took the cap off and the pungent odor of diesel fuel escaped and filled the air! I then realized that I had pumped it into the tank by mistake as the pump was located right by the gas pumps and I didn’t notice!

It was a God moment….a serious moment. For He had visited us and answered Jeff’s prayer in a more miraculous way than we could have imagined, and had brought us a very serious message directly from God that we would never forget. Who was this mysterious man with the burning eyes that came off interstate 65 to give us this Word of prophecy and a Word of knowledge for our dilemma? Was he a Christian who was simply sensitive to the Spirit of God? Or…….was he an angel?

"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." Hebrews 13:2

Kevin J Wilson / Alpha & Omega Outreach Ministries

(Kevin also told me that they all walked back to that truck stop and called his brother who came and helped them drain the diesel fuel out and put a few gallons of gas back in- he also went on to say that the teens loved the delay! It meant that they didn’t have to go home so soon and were excitingly chattering about what God did! It effected and changed their lives completely!)

Isn’t that a BAD WORD !?!?

Bad words & good words…..how can we tell the difference between the two…especially if we are a young impressionable child?

During one of our Release Time lessons entitled "Who is Jesus?", I was explaining to the children how we can know for sure that Jesus is who He says He is…..I started out a sentence with "Jesus Christ……." And as soon as I said it one of our 4th grade students hollered out in a startled and loud voice "OOOOOOOOOOh! You said a bad word!" Well needless to say that stopped me right in my tracks! The only way this child ever heard the name of Jesus used together with Christ was in anger, as a ‘bad’ word! We sometimes forget how much children learn from the tone of our voice as well as the words we choose to say. For example I could say the word "apple" in an angry tone, and although the word apple is not a bad word a child could perceive it that way. How sad though, that a child heard our precious saviors name in an angry manner all her life.

Children tell the difference between a ‘good’ word and a ‘bad’ word by the way the word is used and the tone of voice it is used in.
