"We aren't related to those Wilhites"

If you are a Southwest Indiana Wilhite you probably have heard the "not related" message at one point or another. There is a page full of Wilhites in the Evansville area phone book, but we all seem to have grown up with the belief that we aren't related. Why? We all came from somewhere, and some of us decided it was time to find out where.

The research led us to Joseph and Polly Wilhite and the big family they brought to Indiana in the 1820's. We want to share that information with relatives near and far.

Southwest Indiana Association of Wilhite Families

Keith and Marnica Wilhite. Marnica is our record keeper, she is the keeper of the official list of Southwest Indiana Wilhites, and she has done much of the hard work of pulling together our scattered, fragmented and incomplete family history.

Gerald Wilhite. "I've been interested in family history since my great-aunt Rosie told me that her great-grandfather was Joseph Wilhite and he came from Virginia, that was almost 50 years ago," said Gerald. He became seriously interested in genealogy after visiting the Germanna Foundation and site of the 1728 Wilhite family farm in Virginia.

We are indebted to the following:

  • Beth Seaton for helping us out with info concerning our cousins in the Joseph/Henry/Alonzo Wilhite family line.
  • Doyle Wilhite for assistance with the Gordon/Leroy Wilhite line.
  • Fred and Norma Wilhite for the excellent book that Norma produced for the descendants of James Wilhite.
  • Robert Wilhite for assistance with the Franklin and Obediah Wilhite lines.
  • Kirk Mann for taking the initiative to get this project started and for his assistance with parts of the William Wilhite line.

We are still looking for contributors to information about other family members. We would like for you to join us if you trace your ancestors back to Richard Wilhite (b.1830), John Wilhite (b.1828), Obediah Wilhite (b.1820), Sarah Ann Wilhite-Ross (b.abt. 1817), or Elizabeth Wilhite-Schenk (b.abt. 1815).

Even if you are not sure who your earliest Wilhite ancestors were we would like for you to join us in the effort to establish the connections for Southwest Indiana. Contact Us and join in the search, we would be very pleased to have your help.
