Our 1995 Goldwing along side of our 1982 Silverwing.

Where It All Started Again

We began our return to riding motorcycles in the early spring of 1997 when we purchased the '82 Silverwing. We had owned a 350CB in the early 70's. It didn't take us very long to appreciate the "touring" aspects built into this bike. The driveshaft driven ride, the fairing, AM/FM cassette radio, removable luggage bags, & touring box.

I added extension rails under the touring box to raise it so I could mount a large padded backrest for added co-rider comfort. In addition, I added a slim CB over the left hand pocket. I did not invest in the PTT option but rather must pick up the mic to talk. I do have a simple jambox headset in the helmet I wear when riding the Silverwing. It plugs in to the external speaker slot on the CB and I can hear with ease. The Silverwing is not as quiet as our Goldwing but not as loud as many small bikes!

My particular Silverwing has a few features that I have not seen on many silverwings. The chrome luggage rails and the chrome rail that surrounds the touring box. The Silverwing has found itself to be my bike when riding one-up when "the boys" go on our weekday evening rides. I worry a little less about replacement costs and dollars invested when we are screaming around the highways and county roads in Southern Indiana.

Although it is only 500 cc she handles well and hums down the interstate up to 70-75 mph. Although the top end is well over 75 the aerodynamically she becomes a bit uncomfortable. I would love to take her down to the Smokey Mountains and put her through her paces at Deals Gap and see how she responds.
